This Valentine’s Day, the Allen County Public Library (ACPL) is encouraging readers to take a chance on something new with a creative and charming display at the Main Library: “Blind Date with a Book.”

The special display features a curated selection of books wrapped in paper, concealing the title and author. Instead of judging a book by its cover, patrons are invited to choose their next read based on a short teaser description hinting at the story inside. From heartfelt romances and gripping thrillers to thought-provoking nonfiction and unexpected literary gems, the display reflects the depth and diversity of ACPL’s collection.

The idea grew out of a desire to make browsing more interactive and to help readers discover titles they might otherwise overlook.

“We wanted to create a fun way for people to step outside their usual reading habits,” said Sara Perišić, Adult Services Assistant Manager at the Allen County Public Library. “There’s something exciting about not knowing exactly what you’re getting. It adds a sense of adventure to the experience, and it’s been wonderful to see patrons embrace that.”

Perišić said the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive, with many of the wrapped books quickly finding new homes.

“Patrons have told us they love the surprise element,” she said. “It’s been a simple idea, but it’s sparked a lot of joy. One woman picked out four books just yesterday. We almost can’t wrap them fast enough!”

The “Blind Date with a Book” display is available in the Readers’ Services department at the Main Library and ACPL librarians plan to continuously restock the display until the end of February. Similar displays can be found at the Aboite, Georgetown, Hessen Cassel, Little Turtle, and Pontiac branches.
