Beyond the Crime Story: ACPL Explores Genealogy Methods for True Crime Research
True crime fans are used to following the clues. This September, the Allen County Public Library invites them to go beyond podcasts and documentaries and explore historical mysteries using the same research techniques genealogists use to uncover the past. Rather than solving cold cases, the focus is on using historical records to better understand crimes, mysteries, and other difficult chapters that may emerge in our own family stories.
“Tracing Crime Through Time: Genealogy Methods for True Crime Research” will be offered at three ACPL branches in September, giving adults a chance to explore how family history research can help uncover the people, places, and timelines behind real crimes and historical mysteries.
The program will be offered:
Monday, Sept. 21, 7-8 p.m. at the Aboite Branch, 5630 Coventry Lane
Wednesday, Sept. 23, 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Dupont Branch, 536 E. Dupont Road
Thursday, Sept. 24, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Georgetown Branch, 6600 E. State Blvd.
In this engaging session, participants will learn how genealogists use census records, newspapers, city directories, vital records, and other historical sources to uncover the people, places and timelines behind notorious cases. Participants will also learn how to build a research plan, track individuals across multiple records, and separate fact from speculation. Whether investigating a well-known case or a local mystery, these tools can help researchers dig deeper and tell a more complete, evidence-based story.
For true crime fans, the program offers a chance to apply their curiosity and investigative instincts to historical and family research.
“Genealogy can help us better understand the difficult or unexpected stories we uncover in our own families,” said Allison DePrey, Genealogy Services Manager. “Historical records give us the evidence and context to explore those stories and better understand the people involved.”
The program is intended for adults, and no previous genealogy experience is required. Space is limited, and participants are encouraged to register in advance to reserve a spot and receive event reminders. Registration can be completed at acpl.info/events.
