ACPL Presents “Lincoln at the Library: 3D Photography in Lincoln’s Time”

The Allen County Public Library (ACPL) invites you to a fascinating program titled “Lincoln at the Library: 3D Photography in Lincoln’s Time,” presented by educator and artist Colleen Woolpert. The engaging exploration of stereographic photography will take place on Saturday, October 26 at 2 p.m. at the Main Library downtown and virtually via Zoom.

This program will delve into the world of stereographs—small cards featuring two nearly identical images that create the illusion of depth when viewed through a stereoscope. Stereographs were popular from 1850 through 1930.

“What many people don’t realize is that the roots of our modern virtual reality technology dates back to the earliest days of photography,” said ACPL Senior Lincoln Librarian Jessie Cortesi. “Stereographs were a popular mass media and played a vital role in documentary photography during Lincoln’s time. We’re fortunate to have excellent examples in our collection at the library and even more excited about an expert coming to visit virtually and share her knowledge with us!”

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the history of this captivating photographic format and view a selection of stereographs from the library’s Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, featuring President Abraham Lincoln and significant Civil War scenes. Attendees will also explore other fascinating topics that entertained and informed people during Lincoln’s era.
