The Allen County Public Library (ACPL) and the Fort Wayne Housing Authority are proud to announce their partnership with Memorial Park Middle School as part of the National Book Foundation’s Book Rich Environment program. As part of this program, the ACPL delivered 200 copies of “Maizy Chen’s Last Chance” to students at Memorial Park. The book is a Newberry Honor Award winner and a National Book Award finalist that tells the story of a young Chinese-American girl learning about her roots, and herself, while working at the family restaurant in Last Chance, Minnesota.

The book’s author, Lisa Yee, will be virtually visiting the students on Monday, April 29 at 9 a.m. This virtual author visit aims to inspire a love for reading and provide students with the opportunity to engage with the renowned author. Students will have the unique opportunity to delve into the book and ask Lisa Yee questions about the story, her life, and other topics of interest.

The Book Rich Environment program, in collaboration with the National Book Foundation, aims to promote literacy and foster a love for reading among children and families in underserved communities. By partnering with the Allen County Public Library and the Fort Wayne Housing Authority, Memorial Park Middle School is able to offer this enriching experience to its students.

"We are thrilled to be part of the Book Rich Environment program and to bring Lisa Yee's virtual visit to the Memorial Park students," said ACPL Assistant Youth Services Manager Aisha Hallman. "The Library is always seeking partnerships that allow us to expand our reach, connect with new audiences, and get books in the hands of young people. We are grateful for the partnership with FWCS, the Fort Wayne Housing Authority, and the National Book Foundation for making this possible."

The Allen County Public Library and the Fort Wayne Housing Authority are committed to promoting literacy and providing educational opportunities to the community.
