The sunlit Great Hall is the orientation and information hub of the Main library. Located in the Great Hall you will find the Circulation Desk and Holds pick-up area, General Reference Desk, self-checkout stations and electronic catalog stations. There is also a large area in the Great Hall for exhibits and near Children's Services you will find the McMillen Globe given to the library in 1968.
Stairs and elevators at each end of the Great Hall connect to the library’s second level, and the Lower Level Theater.
The vault over the Great Hall, with its large, north-facing skylight and shaded south-facing windows, makes the play of daylight central to the experience of the building.

Community use facilities are organized along the southern side of the First Floor. These Community Spaces, along with the Great Hall and the Auditorium, can be used independently from other Library spaces. Thus community functions can extend past library hours without compromising security, and reading and browsing within Library departments will not be disturbed by group activities.

The Café and Friends' Store are located at the corner of Washington and Webster Streets, adjacent to the renovated East Entry. A new window wall provides views towards the Firefighters' Museum and the plaza, and connects to an outdoor dining patio.

Three flexible Community Meeting Rooms, Access Fort Wayne Television, the Community Computing Center, and Public Computer Training are located in the existing building along the Washington Boulevard side.
