COMPUTER REFERENCE ASSISTANT
Readers' Services

Part-time, 20 hours per week at the Main Library, 900 Library Plaza

RESPONSIBILITIES: In general, this position will assist patrons with the comfortable and appropriate use of technology in the library. More specifically, assist and instruct patrons, some with little or no computer experience, in the use of computer equipment in a Windows environment. In addition, aid patrons with the use of the PC Reservation system, photocopiers, launching of desktop applications, use of PC peripherals including printing and downloading.  Answer directional and general informational questions. Keep computers, copiers, printers and scanners clean; stock supplies and replace paper and cartridges as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned.  While performing these tasks, refer patrons to a librarian when assistance is needed in formulating an effective search strategy, identifying an appropriate information source, evaluating results of a search or utilizing other library resources.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or any combination of education, training or experience which provides the required knowledge and skills. Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite applications (particularly Word), the Internet, social media, and email functions. Strong, successful record of customer service interaction. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, available library resources and their particular uses, including departmental and staff strengths. Solid communication skills, particularly verbal ability. Dedication to providing excellent customer service and the ability to work cooperatively with a variety of staff and public. Ability to work independently within established guidelines. Willingness and ability to continue to learn new technologies. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential.  Ability and willingness to work the following schedule: Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and both days every other weekend with Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.  When the library is closed on Sundays for the summer, the schedule would include another 5-hour shift in the week to make up for the Sunday closings.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The Readers’ Services Department is sometimes extremely busy, but the noise level is expected to remain low so that patrons can concentrate on their research. Generally a friendly atmosphere, though patrons using computers are sometimes stressed and can therefore be challenging at times.  Ability to bend and reach frequently, lift up to 10 pounds infrequently, and lift up to 50 pounds assisted on occasion.

PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES: Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable.

BRANCH ASSISTANT
Georgetown Branch
Part-time, 28 hours per week at the Georgetown Branch, 6600 East State Blvd.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist branch manager and other staff with public service work and clerical routines. For example, open and close the circulation desk. Shelve books. Check materials in and out. Register patrons for library cards. Help patrons find library materials. Assist patrons with the use of machines and equipment. Refer patrons to appropriate staff for in-depth assistance. In general, work to give friendly, courteous, and effective service.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma. Good literacy skills and familiarity with computers. Ability to learn on-line systems for circulating books and for patron use. Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing pleasantly and cooperatively with patrons over the phone and in person up to 80% of the work time. Cooperative spirit, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential.
Monday -Thursday 4:00-9:00 and Saturdays 9:00-6:00

PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable but not required.

ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES - HOUSEKEEPER
Waynedale Branch
Part-time, 20 hours per week at the Wayndale Branch, 2200 Lower Huntington Road

RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform variety of housekeeping tasks to provide warm, clean, attractive environment in the library. Tasks include vacuuming, dusting, cleaning restrooms and windows, etc. Perform floor, tile, and carpet maintenance tasks such as wet-mopping, dust-mopping, stripping and waxing, and extraction cleaning. Replace light bulbs. Maintain housekeeping equipment in good condition. In general, work to insure all library property is cleaned, organized, and safe. Perform other tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other employees. Ability to lift as much as 50 pounds. Ability to use a ladder. Work continually on feet and perform tasks in a confined area such as a restroom stall. Good organizational skills. Ability to work with library-approved cleaning chemicals and interpret written product instructions. Ability to work courteously and cooperatively with fellow staff members. Cooperative spirit, enthusiasm, reliability, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential.
Willingness and ability to work Monday - Friday from 6:00 am – 10:00 am.

PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable but not required.
