BRANCH ASSISTANT - GRABILL BRANCH

​part-time, 20 hours per week

RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist branch manager and other staff with public service work and clerical routines. For example, open and close the circulation desk. Shelve books. Check materials in and out. Register patrons for library cards. Help patrons find library materials. Assist patrons with the use of machines and equipment. Refer patrons to appropriate staff for in-depth assistance. Help with displays and decor in branch. In general, work to give friendly, courteous, and effective service. Other tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
: Knowledge of Dewey Decimal system and general knowledge of branch operations, normally acquired through completion of tenth grade and three to six months on-the-job library training and experience. Good literacy skills and familiarity with computers. Good physical stamina is necessary for standing and walking up to 80% of the work time and lifting loads of 10-25 pounds. Ability to learn on-line systems for circulating books and for patron use. Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing pleasantly and cooperatively with a diverse group of patrons including both children and adults. Genuine liking and understanding of people. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Ability to work a varied schedule of days, evenings, and Saturdays.

PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES
: Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable but not required.

COMPENSATION
: This position pays $10.52 per hour. Two weeks vacation and pro-rated holiday pay. Employee assistance plan (EAP). Voluntary term life and critical illness insurance options. Deferred compensation plan (457). Flexible spending account. Federal credit union. Free parking.

Repair damaged materials. Daily maintenance of periodicals. Shelve books. Check materials in and out. Register patrons for library cards. Help patrons find library materials. Assist patrons with the use of machines and equipment. Refer patrons to appropriate staff for in-depth assistance. In general, work to give friendly, courteous, and effective service.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of Dewey Decimal system and general knowledge of branch operations, normally acquired through completion of tenth grade and three to six months on-the-job library training and experience. Good literacy skills and familiarity with computers. Ability to learn on-line systems for circulating books and for patron use. Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing pleasantly and cooperatively with patrons over the phone and in person up to 80% of the work time. Cooperative spirit, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Schedule:  Hours will include at least one evening per week and alternating Friday or Saturday shifts each week.

* Skills test scores are held from January 1st through December 31st of each year. If you apply for a position after January 1st that requires a skills test, you will need to take the skills test again for the new year. If you have applied for a position that is not filled before December 31st, your application for that position only will carry over until that position is closed.
