Waynedale Branch Assistant
Children's Summer Assistant II, Temporary Summer

Part-time, 10 hours per week at our Waynedale Branch
RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist branch manager and other staff with public service work and clerical routines. For example, open and close the circulation desk. Shelve books. Check materials in and out. Register patrons for library cards. Help patrons find library materials. Assist patrons with the use of machines and equipment. Refer patrons to appropriate staff for in-depth assistance. In general, work to give friendly, courteous, and effective service.
Knowledge of Dewey Decimal system and general knowledge of branch operations, normally acquired through completion of tenth grade and three to six months on-the-job library training and experience. Good literacy skills and familiarity with computers. Ability to learn on-line systems for circulating books and for patron use. Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing pleasantly and cooperatively with patrons over the phone and in person up to 80% of the work time. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule that may include days, evenings, and/or Saturdays.
PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES: Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable but not required.
COMPENSATION: This position pays $10.52 per hour. Two weeks vacation, federal credit union, employee assistance plan, flexible spending plan and free parking.

CHILDREN'S SUMMER ASSISTANT II
Temporary Summer Position at the Main Library
RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist the department manager and other staff with public services work and clerical routines. Help patrons find library materials. Answer simple reference questions. Take an active role in programming such as story time and special projects. Give library tours and prepare departmental displays. Assist patrons in using internet and educational computers.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma and one to two years’ experience working with children. Knowledge of children's literature, early literacy concepts, computer fundamentals, and library reference skills. Must pass Dewey Decimal skills test. Must have a genuine interest in and understanding of children and possess good interpersonal communication skills sufficient for supervising children. Basic knowledge of routine clerical tasks such as answering the telephone, typing, and filing. Good physical stamina is necessary for standing and walking up to 80% of the time worked and lifting loads of 10-25 pounds. High ability to deal positively and cooperatively with a wide variety of public and fellow staff members. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Must be able to work a varied schedule of days, evenings and weekends from June 1 through August 15, 2015. (these dates are subject to change)

COMPENSATION: Pay rate is $10.86 per hour. Free parking.
