About the Audio Reading Service
As a department of the Allen County Public Library, the Audio Reading Service
is an audio reading service primarily designed for, and directed to, people who have a visual or reading impairment, including any individual who is unable to read conventional printed material because of blindness, low-vision, a literacy issue, or a physical impairment which makes it difficult to hold a book or turn pages such as stroke, MS, Parkinson’s or arthritis.
We broadcast in a fifty-mile radius from Fort Wayne over a sub-channel frequency provided, at cost, by WBCL FM. A special SCA radio is needed to hear this broadcast. The radio is loaned to individuals from the Allen County Public Library at no cost. An application is needed to acquire the SCA radio. Please see the side bar on the right to download an application or call the department at 260.421.1376 and an application will be mailed.
The Audio Reading Service can also be heard over an alternative language setting on PBS 39.4. Audio Reading Service is available on free Apps for mobile devices through iBlink which is committed to accessibility for visually impaired people. We also stream the broadcast well as provide podcasts of our programs.
Please see the side bar on the right for additional information on how to listen through these methods.
What Do We Read?
Our audio reading service volunteers read local news and features from a dozen area newspapers, including the live, daily readings of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette and News Sentinel. We read books, grocery ads and obituaries, plus nearly 40 magazines and other publications. See a complete list of what we read.
Audio Reading Service Program Schedule
The library’s audio reading service broadcasts 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Here is a large-print program schedule and a schedule in a grid-format.
“Listening to the volunteers read every day helped restore my mother’s ability to understand spoken words again – and definitely helped her reconnect to the outside world. I cannot thank you all enough and just wanted you to know that what you do really, really matters.” -Joyce
“I recently found your radio reading service and like what I've heard! I am a 73 year old former high school English teacher, now completely blind. So access to programming like yours is of real benefit to me.” –Will
I received your radio last week. So glad to have it. Enjoyed readings and readers. My husband died so no one here to read to me. I thank you all, especially the readers. -- Kathryn
