Services for Educators
TEACHER LOANS
Teachers who hold an Allen County Public Library card are able to
check out supplemental classroom materials on their personal card.
The initial loan period for these books is three weeks. Materials
can then be renewed in person, over the phone, and by logging into your account through our
online
catalog for additional three-week periods for as long
as they are needed, provided no other patrons have placed holds on
any item(s). This service is provided by the Allen County Public Library
for the benefit of students in Allen County.
All Library materials (including non-print items such as videos, CD-ROMs,
audio cassettes, filmstrips, etc.) may be checked out and returned
at any Library agency. All Allen
County Public Library circulation
rules (including fines) apply to materials checked out by teachers.
The teacher in whose name the card is issued is responsible for items
checked out on this card.
CUSTOM COLLECTION
In addition to circulating classroom materials, the Children's Services
department provides Custom Collections, a special service to classroom and substitute
teachers, homeschooling families, parents, college students -- anyone needing children's materials.
With one week advance notice, Children's Services staff will prepare
thematically based collections. Please be
prepared to tell us the theme, grade level, reading level, and number
and types of materials needed. Custom Collections are not limited
as to the format of the materials. These materials may be renewed
after their three week checkout in person, over the phone, or through
through our online catalog.
JUVENILE DEPOSIT COLLECTION (jDC)
The Juvenile Deposit Collection (jDC) program is a service for area
childcare facilities that involves checking out a box of books
to each participating center for use in the classroom. The boxes
are delivered in the fall, spring, and summer. Each set contains
50 books that include concept books ("ABC's", colors,
shapes, etc.), seasonal books, and storybooks that can be used in
the classroom.
At the time that the books are dropped off, trained staff from the Children's Services department perform
a thematic storytime for the children of the center, using a wide
variety of techniques, such as flannel boards, participatory storytelling
and fingerplays, to share the literature.
OTHER SERVICES
In addition to the aforementioned special services for teachers
in Allen County, the department also provides various other services
that teachers are encouraged to use with their classes.
TOURS
Tours of the Children's Services department and/or the entire
Main Library are available on a pre-scheduled basis. The tour of the
entire Main Library includes all of the major public departments,
plus the Television Studio when they are not in production. Areas
of special interest can also be requested. In each department, major
collections, technology, and points of interest will be covered. Length
and depth of the tour depends on the age of the children. A complete
tour of the Children's Services department and the Main Library takes
approximately one to one and a half hours. We encourage teachers to
allow time for students to browse independently and check out books
after the tour.
STORYTELLING
Upon request, the Children's Services department will provide a trained
storyteller to share this oral tradition with your students. If a
specific subject for storytelling is desired, please make that inquiry
when you schedule your storytelling session. Classes may visit the
library and use these services, or a storyteller may be scheduled
to visit your classroom.
STORYTIMES
Thematically based storytimes are a service provided upon request,
and a wide variety of techniques are used to help the children experience
literature. Trained staff use books, flipcharts, flannel boards, fingerplays,
action rhymes, puppets, songs, props, and interactive digital technology
to involve children in a 30 minute thematic storytime. If you wish to request
a specific theme for a storytime, please make that inquiry when the
program is scheduled.
BOOKTALKS
Booktalking is a service provided by the Children's Services department
for groups of children. Designed to encourage children to read, booktalks
are often interesting "commercials" for books that entice
the students to read the books themselves. Themes include: You've
Seen the Movie, Now Read the Book; The Work of Patricia Polacco; Books
to Tickle Your Funny Bone; and Biographies/Autobiographies.
For these and other services for educators, please feel free to
call and schedule an appointment for your group. Please schedule
with us by the 15th of the previous month for a desired date. (Schedule
by June 15th for a July date, schedule by July 15th for an August
appointment, etc.) We will happily schedule your group's special
activity up to one year in advance. All scheduling is arranged as
staff is available. Call the Children's Services department at
(260) 421-1220.
