Anne Bradstreet, 1613-1673, wrote the first published volume of American
poetry, titled The Tenth Muse . A 1981 book on her life and works stated
that she was "one of the major artists of the century, and a magnificent
example of a life well lived." She married Simon Bradstreet just before
her sea-journey to New England with the first Puritans in 1630 and created
a good home in the wilderness replete with eight children and, surprisingly,
800 books.
